Pashmina Shawls… How To Tie A Shawl: A Step By Step Guide

Posted: August 17th, 2015 by

By Meryl Rougeaux

Wearing a pashmina shawl will not only make you feel warm but also give you a stylish look. Even if they are simple, they still have capability to convert boring outfit into a definite fashion statement. A genuine pashmina shawl will cost a little bit more, but when you wear it, you will feel more comfort, beauty and elegance. As incredible as it may seem, there is more than one way to tie or wear your pashmina shawl. You can benefit from the greatest variety of pashmina shawls and find plenty of tips on how to wear it. Pashmina shawls aren’t just worn for their looks, though their generous size will keep wearer cozy and comfortable throughout the cooler winter months.

Although the simple question of how to put on a shawl may seem extremely trivial to some of us, it can actually be a valid question for others. Imagine a person from a completely different culture, someone who has never seen or heard of a shawl. Naturally, that person would have no idea what it is for, more so how it should be used. Thus, this guide exists, for the people of the world who have their first encounters with shawls.

Steps to put on a shawl:

The first step is to spread it out and to rest it neatly on a flat surface

The second step is to try to crumple it width-wise to the thickness that you desire or until it looks rather voluminous

YouTube Preview Image

The third step is to take the middle and let it rest behind your neck while allowing the two ends to fall over and in front of your shoulders

Thus, you have finally completed the most basic way of how to put on a shawl.

After mastering those basic steps, you can start to add some flare to the way you put on your shawl. Instead of merely draping it over your shoulders, you can tie it into several knots or twist it into a pretzel-like shape. The following are the steps.

Putting on a shawl with flare:

One knot – take both ends of the shawl and tie them up in a knot. Put one end behind you and let the other end dangle in front of you

Twister – take both ends of the shawl and twists them around several times. You can place the twisted ends down your chest like a neck-tie or play around with it

Arm wrap – spread out the shawl and diagonally wrap it around your arm. Keep on wrapping it and fasten it with a clip at the end. The end product should look as if you have a sleeve on your arm

Leg wrap – just like the arm wrap but you do it on your leg. You may need a bigger shawl depending on how much you want your leg covered

As you can see, the ones mentioned above are merely samples of how to put on a shawl. From one idea, another can spring out so keep your imagination open and let all your creative juices flow to create your own unique look.

US Congress may re-establish the Luxury Tax

Posted: August 17th, 2015 by

Monday, December 11, 2006

There are suppositions that the US Democratic Congress may re-establish the luxury taxes, which were already once introduced in the 1990s. The suppositions resulted in the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors commissioning a report on various tax issues.

Material goods such as jewelry, watches, expensive furs, jet planes, boats, yachts, and luxury cars had already been subjected to additional taxes back in 1990. After 3 years these taxes were repealed, though the luxury automobiles tax was still active for the next 13 years.

Rodderick A. DeArment, a representative of law firm and lobbyist Covington and Burling, guided the report. The report outlined the fact that, in 1993, the Congress did not collect as much money from the luxury taxes as it had predicted. It also stated that although its ravaging effect on employment in several industries was sensible, “the turnover that occurred in Congress made it possible for the new group to learn the same lessons again”.

The luxury tax could produce unpredictable effects for the watch industry and the report was meant to inform the members of this branch about the effects of these taxes on this luxury goods’ industry.

Mao-style suits fading away in China

Posted: August 13th, 2015 by

Thursday, March 17, 2005

The famous “Mao suit”, prominently worn by Chinese leaders in the decades following that country’s 1949 revolution, is on the verge of disappearing from China, as the fashion-conscious younger generation shuns the previously common style in favor of the latest apparel offered by modern designers.

China’s President Hu Jintao was last seen in a green Mao suit while visiting a military base during the Chinese New Year.

During the recent National People’s Congress gathering in Beijing, Sun Fucai, manager of the official Red Capital clothing store, reported that Mao suits made up only five percent of his sales.

One shopkeeper near Beijing, Hu Bixing, sells Mao suits, but hasn’t worn his own Mao suit for about ten years. He says they are “…so out of fashion.”

In China, the style of dress is still worn by older urban dwellers, and many farmers still wear the hat which typically accompanies the suit, called a “Liberation” cap.

The Mao suit has a long history in China, going back to 1912, when it became known as a “Zhongshan suit”, because Sun Yat-sen, or Sun Zhongshan as he is more commonly known in Chinese, popularized the style as the president of the Republic of China. It was later made famous by the communist Mao Zedong during his reign as the leader of China.

One Mao suit owner remembers purchasing what for him was a very expensive version of the suit when it was more popular several decades ago.

“I haven’t worn it in 20 years,” said government-employed driver Zhang Xiaotong. “If I put it on today people would look at me like I was a bit odd.”

How To Make Mountains And Hills For Your Model Railroad

Posted: August 12th, 2015 by

By Douglas Anderson

Once you’ve got a train layout set up on a flat table, you might want to make it more interesting by adding some mountains and hills. There are a couple of ways to do this, and they are both easy.

Papier-Mch Method

If your layout is temporary, or you don’t want to spend much money, you can use the papier-mch method. Basically, you just scrunch up some newspapers into the general shape of the hill or mountain, then cover them with sheets of newspaper dipped in papier-mch paste.

The traditional method of making papier-mch paste is to add one part water to one part flour. Some people prefer to boil the paste, saying that it makes the consistency smoother. Water to flour ratio is changed to five parts water to one part flour in this case. Other people use a three to one or a one to one ratio of water and polyvinyl acetate wood glue. Still others say that starch makes a fine paste. Adding a dash of cinnamon to the mixture gives the paste a pleasant smell; adding a dash of salt and sugar reduces the chances of the product developing mould.

You simply dip sheets of newspaper (fold them a couple of times to make them thicker) in the paste and drape them over the scrunched up newspapers. The sheets will be soft and pliable, so mould them into hills and valleys as you like. Let the papier-mch dry overnight. You will find that it is hard and rigid, like a piata.

YouTube Preview Image

Paint it with a water-based paint in shades of green (for grass) and brown (for dirt) and grey (for rock). You can also use spray paint, but make sure it is matte, not glossy, paint. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle some grass (available at the hobby shop) or green-coloured sawdust. When the paint is dry, add some lichen for bushes and trees (also available at any hobby shop).

Window Screening and Wooden Supports

If your train layout is permanent, a more durable method of making mountains and hills is to use screening and wooden supports. This also has the advantage that you can run tracks on the mountain itself, providing you make the appropriate supports. Basically, you cut wooden support blocks to the appropriate size, then drape window screening (called “fly screen” in Australia) over the blocks, stapling the screen to the blocks. You should fasten the blocks to the table with screws or nails first, so they don’t move around.

If you want, you can build a second track bed around or through the mountain, elevated above the table. Simply use support blocks and plywood to make a rigid base for the track.

Once the screening is in place, pinch it in places to make rugged edges, ditches, and valleys. Then mix up some common household plaster (available at any hardware store to fix holes in a plaster wall) and slobber it over the screen. There is no need to be careful, just make sure all the screen is covered. A thicker plaster mix works much better than a thin mix, as the latter allows the screen to show through.

When you get to the rugged vertical bits, use horizontal strokes of a knife to simulate rock cuts. Let the plaster dry overnight and then paint as described above.

Finally, finish it off with lichen bushes and trees as appropriate.

Don’t Forget Access

When you are deciding how big to make your mountain, and where to place it, also think about derailments. Murphy’s Law guarantees that, at some point, your train is going to derail in the tunnel through your mountain. Make sure the tunnel entrance is large enough so you can reach in and get your train out.

Or consider these alternatives: If you have made a papier-mch mountain, and not glued it to the table, you can simply lift it off the table.

If you have made a permanent wood block and wire screen mountain, then consider cutting access holes in the table, below the mountain, so you can reach in and right the train or remove it. Don’t make the holes too close to the track, because if the train does derail at that spot, you don’t want it to fall through the hole onto the floor.

Drone smartphone app to help heart attack victims in remote areas announced

Posted: August 12th, 2015 by

Monday, August 26, 2013

German non-profit organization Definetz announced on Friday the development of the ‘Defikopter': a medical drone, launched by smartphone app, designed to be able to fly defibrillators to heart attack victims in remote areas quicker than an ambulance.

The Defikopter is to be launched by an app that sends out the GPS coordinates of the victim. With the ability to fly at 70km per hour in all weather conditions, the eight-armed octocopter could reach any patient within a ten kilometre radius.

The invention has received cautious praise from German medical services; the drone is still in the development and testing stage. Definetz and collaborating drone builder Height Tech have not issued any information about the release of the smartphone app or about when the drone will be available for medical services to purchase.

“We’ll have to see how much these drones can help,” German emergency services union representative Marco König told The Local. German news site Mittelbayerische reports a price tag of €20,000 (US$26,000) apiece.

One major problem Definetz faces is the law that requires all unmanned flying vehicles in Germany to be supervised. Another is that only members of the public who downloaded the app ‘just in case’ of an emergency, plus emergency workers with the app, could summon a drone.

Musician Joni Mitchell hospitalised after found unconscious in home

Posted: August 11th, 2015 by

Saturday, April 4, 2015

Well-known Canadian singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell was found unconscious on Tuesday at her Los Angeles home, and immediately taken to hospital, according to reports. An update on her condition appeared yesterday on her website.

The update yesterday on her website said, “Joni remains under observation in the hospital and is resting comfortably. We are encouraged by her progress and she continues to improve and get stronger each day.” Webpage ‘We love you Joni’ was also created for fans on Facebook and Twitter to send Mitchell messages to get well soon.

A previous statement left on Mitchell’s website on Tuesday said, “Joni was found unconscious in her home this afternoon. She regained consciousness on the ambulance ride to an L.A. area hospital. She is currently in intensive care undergoing tests and is awake and in good spirits.” They added, “More updates to come when we hear them. Light a candle and sing a song, let’s all send good wishes her way.”

According to an early report by TMZ, the seventy-one year old musician’s condition was serious, and a 911 phone call was made from her home around 2:30 p.m. local time.

Rolling Stone, also claims that a Los Angeles Fire Department spokesperson explained to them that, though they could not reveal who was taken to the hospital at the time, paramedics were sent to Mitchell’s house.

On her twitter account, CBC news producer Leslie Stojsic gave a conflicting statement to other reports on Mitchell’s condition, saying, “Source tells me she’s in hospital recovering after ‘minor medical emergency,’ was *not* found unconscious.” She also added, “I’m told now she’s resting in hospital and is among friends. A good sign.”

It did not take long for her condition in hospital to spread through the social media. Many tweeted prayers and well wishes; one of them being rocker Billy Idol. He tweeted, “Sorry to hear todays news about Joni Mitchell. I sang on her ‘Dancing Clown’ single many moons ago, all the best 4 her recovery.”

Mitchell also reportedly suffers from Morgellons disease; a skin condition where people claim they have fibres coming out of their skin, along with tingling sensations. In her memoir, ‘Joni Mitchell: In her own words,’ released last year, the folk artist describes her experiences with the disease saying, “All the time it felt like I was being eaten alive by parasites living under my skin. I couldn’t leave my house for several years.”

What To Do When His Friends Don’t Like You

Posted: August 6th, 2015 by

By Nelson Berry

Do you feel like his friends don’t really like you? Do you wish that you could at least get closer to them? One of the things you have to consider when you’re in a relationship is the people that surround him. As much as possible, you don’t want to develop animosity with any one of them to avoid complications within the relationship.

But there are certain things that cannot be helped, including getting cold shoulders from his circle of pals. To learn to cope with it better, take note of these tips:

Be friendly.

Perhaps they are treating you that way because they don’t know you too well. It’s time to be friendlier toward them. You may want to ignore their cold shoulder first. If they know that you’re actually nice in person, they will start to loosen up. Don’t forget to be nice even when your boyfriend is not with you.

Let go of the small things.

There are certain things that you should just let go simply because they don’t matter. Besides, there’s a good chance they are testing you how you are going to react. By choosing your battles, you prevent starting a lot of issues.

Talk to them.

If you truly feel the animosity and the tension, be brave enough to talk to them. You can do this while in the presence of your boyfriend. Be more open in discussing the issues you have about them, as well as allow them to share theirs with you. You may not really like everything they are going to say, but remember that one of the reasons for the meeting is to give you time to clear things out.

YouTube Preview Image

Treat your boyfriend well.

Perhaps they have met a lot of girls who have broken their friend’s hearts. They are just trying to be protective over him. You should not take it against them. Rather prove to them you are not like that by becoming the best girlfriend he can ever have in his life.

Increase your self-confidence.

It’s easy for you to feel insecure or jealous over your boyfriend’s friends especially if they are too testy. However, you can get rid of these negative emotions by improving your confidence. You can utilize subliminal messages or positive statements to help you with that. You can speak of the following subliminal messages:

I am confident about who I am.

I am proud of my strengths.

I am very secure of myself.

However, be careful about becoming too cocky or arrogant. This will only drive his friends farther away.

Tell your boyfriend about it.

It’s possible that your boyfriend has inkling about the issues but thinks you really don’t care much about it. If you need help in settling the tension down, ask for your boyfriend’s assistance. He is the best mediator available.

Distance yourself.

If all things fail, know that you can always distance yourself from them. You don’t have to deal with them all the time. When you see each other in certain occasions, treat them as acquaintances and be very civil. At the end of the day there’s no rule that says you cannot date anyone without befriending his friends.

New ring discovered around Saturn, could explain dark side of its moon

Posted: August 5th, 2015 by

Wednesday, October 7, 2009

Astronomers have found a huge new ring around the planet Saturn. The faint dust ring extends up to 7.4 million miles (12 million km) from the planet and could fit over a billion Earths inside it, making it the largest in the Solar System. It could also solve a mystery about one of Saturn’s moons that has puzzled scientists for centuries.

The ring was found with the help of NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope, with details published today in the journal Nature. It is thought to consist of ice and dust from Saturn’s moon Phoebe, which is kicked up by collisions with comets and then drifts in towards the planet. The ring and moon both orbit in a plane inclined at 27 degrees to the other rings.

“This is one supersized ring,” said Dr Anne Verbiscer of the University of Virginia, one of the authors of the paper. Of Saturn’s other rings, the largest is the E-ring, a mere 150,000 miles (240,000 km) in diameter. Jupiter also has “gossamer rings” of a similar diameter to the E-ring. If the Phoebe ring was visible from Earth, it would appear twice as large in the sky as the full Moon.

However the newly found ring is extremely faint. It is made up of dust particles around 10 microns (thousandths of a millimetre) in size, and according to Verbiscer, “In a cubic km of space, there are all of 10-20 particles.” This explains why it has evaded discovery until now. “If you were standing in the ring itself, you wouldn’t even know it.”

The Phoebe ring does not reflect much visible light, but the Spitzer telescope was able to pick up the dust’s faint infra-red glow. The telescope, launched in 2003, orbits the Sun and is roughly 66 million miles (107 million km) from Earth. It is one of NASA’s four Great Observatories.

The discovery could also finally account for the unusual appearance of Iapetus, another of the planet’s moons. When Iapetus was first observed in 1671 by astronomer Giovanni Cassini, its leading side was seen to be much darker than the other. Until now scientists had been unsure why this was. Now it is thought that the moon orbits in the opposite direction to the ring, and as Iapetus moves through the ring, dust builds up on its front surface. Verbiscer likens it to “bugs on a windshield.”

“Astronomers have long suspected that there is a connection between Saturn’s outer moon Phoebe and the dark material on Iapetus,” said Douglas Hamilton, another author of the paper. The material has been found to have a similar composition to Phoebe’s surface. “This new ring provided convincing evidence of that relationship.”

This is the second major discovery for astronomers studying Saturn in the past month. In September, evidence from the Cassini orbiter showed that Saturn’s other rings were far less flat than expected.
